Jeder Mensch ist ein Künstler

Mit seiner Aussage „Jeder Mensch ist ein Künstler“ wandelte Joseph Beuys das Zitat von Novalis „Jeder Mensch sollte ein Künstler sein“ von der Möglichkeit in eine Ist-Form um und schuf so ein Bewusstsein für die eigene schöpferische Kraft, welche im eigenen Denken begründet liegt. Beuys: „Damit sage ich nichts über die Qualität. Ich sage nur etwas über die prinzipielle Möglichkeit, die in jedem Menschen vorliegt (…) Das Schöpferische erkläre ich als das Künstlerische, und das ist mein Kunstbegriff.“ Joseph Beuys erfasst in seinem erweiterten Kunstbegriff keinen rein theoretischen Ansatz, sondern eine Grundformel des Seins. Seiner Vorstellung nach ist jeder Mensch zur Kreativität fähig, denn jeder Mensch besitzt ihm eigene schöpferische, die Welt bestimmende Fähigkeiten. Beuys weitet den Begriff der Kunst über das rein persönliche hinaus auch auf die Arbeitswelt aus. Die Erweiterung des Kunstbegriffs führt dann zur „Sozialen Plastik“. Eine Soziale Plastik ist jederzeit formbar, sie erstarrt nur, wenn das Denken aufhört – wenn man gedanklich leblos wird. Beuys fordert die Kreativität und aktive Teilnahme aller Menschen, um die soziale Gemeinschaft zu transformieren und zu verbessern.

Every human being is an artist

With his statement ‘Every human being is an artist’, Joseph Beuys transformed Novalis' quote ‘Every human being should be an artist’ from a possibility into a reality, thus creating an awareness of one's own creative power, which is rooted in one's own thinking. Beuys: ‘I am not saying anything about quality. I am only saying something about the fundamental possibility that exists in every human being (...) I define creativity as artistry, and that is my concept of art.’ Joseph Beuys' expanded concept of art is not a purely theoretical approach, but a basic formula of being. According to his idea, every human being is capable of creativity, because every human being possesses their own creative abilities that shape the world. Beuys extends the concept of art beyond the purely personal to the world of work. The expansion of the concept of art then leads to ‘social sculpture’. A social sculpture can be shaped at any time; it only solidifies when thinking ceases – when one becomes mentally lifeless. Beuys calls for the creativity and active participation of all people in order to transform and improve the social community.
